Spain – Argentina 1–1
So, we've reached the final.
A family, a gang, a wolf pack called Argentina against a football machine named
Spain. Pure footballing precision versus an impulsive gang led by its chief.
I've been watching World Cups and European Championships since 1986, and one
thing I've learned is that teams win these tournaments when they have a true
leader—the kind of player the entire squad is willing to follow. I'm not
pointing fingers; you can decide for yourselves who that leader is.
Think back to Pelé, then Garrincha when Pelé got injured, Bobby Charlton,
Beckenbauer, Maradona, Matthäus, Zidane, Ronaldo, and Ronaldinho in his prime,
then Iniesta and Xavi.
Every one of those teams had a leader whom everyone followed and for whom they
were ready to give everything.
Spain deserve a lot of credit. They're a talented young team, but their leader
is still very young. Rodri, to me, is simply an excellent footballer, but not
the kind of charismatic leader who inspires everyone. He's a vital cog in a
machine that rolls over weaker opponents like a locomotive. But who could have
predicted that France would completely lose their edge in their last two
matches? So beating that selfish French team, where everyone seemed to play for
themselves, isn't a true benchmark for me. Yes, Spain are European champions,
but I'm talking specifically about this tournament. Spain absolutely have every
chance of winning today, and they're deservedly the favorites.
Argentina are a family—a wolf pack led by Akela. But will Akela miss? In The
Jungle Book, all the wolves waited for Akela to make a mistake, and eventually
he did. This Argentina squad, however, is different. Scaloni has somehow molded
them into a real gang of fighters. They remind me of Paraguay—constantly biting,
pushing, irritating the opposition—but with a genuine leader and world-class
players in every position. Every player has been carefully selected. For
example, Garnacho wasn't included because he admires Cristiano Ronaldo too much.
That means, in their eyes, he still doesn't fit. This is a modern-day "one for
all and all for one" team. That's something I really admire.
I'm not actually an Argentina supporter. Quite the opposite. Whenever I play as
an amateur player-coach, my team tries to play in the style of Pep Guardiola and
the Spanish football school. I believe it's the classic blueprint of how
football should be played—but it can also be boring. It's football designed to
get results.
I often ask my drinking buddies, "Why did you come to play football?" They
answer, "Just to run around." Then I ask, "So why are we keeping score?" "To
win," they say. Well then, let's play to win—you can always run laps around the
pitch afterward. They don't agree right away, but eventually they do. And then
you realize that not everyone is suited to playing result-oriented football.
That's why Spain also deserve to win today because of their football philosophy
and the system they've built. In the end, it's all a matter of taste. You don't
necessarily have to bet on the team you're supporting.
My predictions:
Argentina to score — 1.53
Both teams will make a mistake, ending 1–1. I expect a tight, physical match
that goes to extra time, where Yamal, being the youngest player, misses a
penalty. Messi rides off into the sunset at the top.
