Predictions in english Чемпионат Италии
Воскресенье, 16 Май 2010

Serie A Week 38 - 16/5/10 (14.00 UK)
Atalanta - Palermo
GOALS WILL BE SHOWN DURING SIENA-INTER ON ESPN
Stadio Azzurri d'Italia

Palermo go into the last game of the season with it all to play for, as they scrap it out with Sampdoria for that final Champions League spot.

With a two-point lead the Genoa-based side are in the box seat, but face a tough game at home to Napoli which Palermo fans will be praying goes the way of Walter Mazzarri's side.

Last weekend saw Atalanta's weak resistance to impending relegation finally give way, as Bortolo Mutti's side slipped into the second tier of Italian football. In reality, the game had been up a while ago as the Nerazzurri have simply not been good enough this year.

Mutti's injury concerns extend to Paraguayan midfielder Edgar Barretto, on-loan Torino midfielder Paolo Zanetti, Argentine defender Leonardo Talamonti and Uruguayan striker Javier Chevanton. Maximiliano Pellegrino, Nicola Amoruso and Jaime Valdes serve one-match suspensions.

Delio Rossi has several players missing with Fabricio Miccoli, Mark Bresciano, Fabio Simplico and Giacomo Brichetto all out injured. Giulio Migliaccio serves a one-game ban.

Keep an eye on: Javier Pastore (Palermo) – Esteban Cambiasso may not have made Diego Maradona's Argentina squad, rather inexplicably, but Pastore did and for good reason. The youngster has been a revelation this season and could well be a subject of intense transfer speculation this summer.

Last five in Serie A: Atalanta (L W L D L) Palermo (W D W W D)

Last season: Atalanta 2-2 Palermo

Atalanta (probable): Consigli; Capelli, Bianco, Manfredini, Bellini; Ferreira Pinto, Guarente, De Ascentis, Padoin; Ceravolo, Tiribocchi

Palermo (probable): Sirigu; Cassani, Kjaer, Bovo, Balzaretti; Bertolo, Liverani, Nocerino; Pastore; Hernandez, Cavani
Serie A Week 38 - 16/5/10 (14.00 UK)
Bari - Fiorentina
Stadio San Nicola

Bari versus Fiorentina sees two teams going in contrasting directions. Fiorentina look to have hit the top and bounced back again, and now Viola fans must be wary of what lies ahead with Coach Cesare Prandelli’s future in major doubt.

Bari supporters, on the other hand, can look forward to another season in the top flight after a super campaign back in Serie A. The two sides sit on the same amount of points, 47, giving something to play for in the tie, although in reality it is pretty much a dead rubber.

Prandelli continues to be without a host of first-team players throughout the side. Full-backs Gianluca Comotto and Manuel Pasqual join Alessandro Gamberini and Udinese loanee Felipe in creating an entire backline of crocked defenders.

South American winger duo Mario Santana and Juan Manuel Vargas both miss the clash as well, while Per Kroldrup serves a one-match ban. Adrian Mutu’s drugs suspension continues to rule him out.

Giampiero Ventura has a host of injuries as well, with Mariano Donda, Andrea Ranocchia, Antonio Langella, Vitali Kutuzov and Riccardo Meggiorini all out on the sidelines. Defender Nicola Belmonte is banned for the last game of the season.

Keep an eye on: Leonardo Bonucci (Bari) – The 23-year-old defender has had a fantastic season for Bari, capping it off with a place in Marcello Lippi's preliminary Azzurri squad of 30 ahead of the World Cup. Barring injury, the Inter academy product should make the final cut of 23 and in all probability will be playing for a higher profile club come next August.

Last five in Serie A: Bari (L L L W D) Fiorentina (D L L L D)

Last season: Not played

Bari (probable): Padelli; A. Masiello, Stellini, Bonucci, Parisi; Alvarez, Gazzi, Donati, Koman; Barreto, Meggiorini

Fiorentina (probable): Frey; De Silvestri, Aya, Natali, Gobbi; Bolatti, Montolivo; Marchionni, Jovetic, Ljajic; Gilardino
Serie A Week 38 - 16/5/10 (14.00 UK)
Cagliari - Bologna
Stadio Sant'Elia

Cagliari and Bologna wave goodbye to the 2009-10 season as they face each other in a meaningless game at the Stadio Sant’Elia. With the Emiliani now safe and the Sardinians practically on holiday, there will be plenty of space for their reserves.

Last weekend, Cagliari were unlucky to lose against Roma at the Olimpico. Despite no real motivation to win, the Isolani scored the opener and only surrendered to a brace from Francesco Totti. They could have perhaps ended the season in a better position but can be happy with their achievements.

“We did try to beat the Giallorossi and wasted several chances but then Totti won it for them,” explained caretaker boss Giorgio Melis.

There was concern regarding Federico Marchetti as the Italian international picked up an injury last week and probably won’t be risked with South Africa 2010 on the horizon.

Bologna secured safety last weekend as Atalanta were defeated by Napoli and the Rossoblu drew against Catania. The fans expected more from their season though and openly criticised the board.

“I am disappointed about that because we have done all we could,” explained President Francesca Menarini.

“The Menarini family has spent a lot in this club and the fans need to give them credit for that,” added boss Franco Colomba. “Against Cagliari we will play several youngsters who haven’t had many chances this year.”

Cristiano Lupatelli should take the gloves from Marchetti for Cagliari. Diego Lopez and Francesco Pisano are injured, which means Daniele Dessena will play in defence. Nene is banned so Jeda will start up front. Andrea Cossu is back after suspension.

Vagelis Moras was allowed to leave the team as he prepares for the World Cup with Greece. At the back there will be Rafael Santos. Nserenko Savio will get a rare opportunity to start and the same goes for Gimenez. Stephen Appiah will feature.

Keep an eye on: Alessandro Matri (Cagliari) – The Rossoblu bomber has scored 13 this term, but has failed to hit the back of the net in recent weeks. This is the perfect chance to end the season on a high as Bologna’s backline looks far from unbeatable.

Last five in Serie A: Cagliari (L D D D L) Bologna (L D W D D)

Last season: Cagliari 5-1 Bologna

Cagliari (probable): Lupatelli; Dessena, Canini, Astori, Agostini; Lazzari, Conti, Biondini; Cossu; Jeda, Matri

Bologna (probable): Viviano; Raggi, Portanova, Santos, Lanna; Savio, Appiah, Guana, Pisanu; Di Vaio, Gimenez
Serie A Week 38 - 16/5/10 (14.00 UK)
Catania - Genoa
Stadio Massimino

Catania approach the last game of the season with one target – to better their previous Serie A points record under Walter Zenga. But Genoa want to end a frustrating season on a high.

The Sicilians have had a good campaign. Under Sinisa Mihajlovic they improved their shape and turned the Stadio Massimino into an impenetrable fortress. After a draw against Bologna, they all want to finish the season with a victory.

“We want to beat Genoa in order to reach our Serie A points record,” explained Jorge Martinez.

“We have already planned for next season and know who is staying and who is going,” revealed Pietro Lo Monaco.

The Liguri have had a below par term. They got knocked out of the Europa League and were hoping to finish in the top seven in order to qualify for Europe again. However, despite beating Milan at the weekend they will end the season in eighth position or even ninth if they lose this one.

“Our boys gave their best against Milan,” said President Enrico Preziosi. “It was a great game and the team remained focus. I am glad we reached 51 points in the table. We have had too many injuries though and that penalized us – we could write a book with all the things that happened to us this year.”

Nicolas Spolli will start at the back for Catania as Christian Terlizzi is on his way out of the club. Alessandro Potenza should also be preferred to Pablo Alvarez. Up front Martinez has a chance to play instead of Mariano Izco even though he is not 100 per cent fit.

Nenad Tomovic will replace the suspended Salvatore Bocchetti while Domenico Criscito will return to the backline, leaving Ivan Juric the left of midfield. Up front Rodrigo Palacio and Gisueppe Sculli should start along with Robert Acquafresca.

Keep an eye on: Maxi Lopez (Catania) – The Argentine striker has been Serie A’s revelation in recent weeks. Since his move to Sicily last January he has managed to score 10 goals and is the most prolific striker in the Etnei line up.

Last five in Serie A: Catania (D D L D D) Genoa (L W L L W)

Last season: Catania 1-0 Genoa

Catania (probable): Andujar; Potenza, Silvestre, Spolli, Capuano; Ledesma, Biagianti, Carboni; Izco, Maxi Lopez, Mascara

Genoa (probable): Scarpi; Tomovic, Papasthatopoulos, Criscito; Mesto, Milanetto, Fatic, Juric; Sculli, Acquafresca, Palacio
Serie A Week 38 - 16/5/10 (14.00 UK)
Chievo - Roma
GOALS WILL BE SHOWN DURING SIENA-INTER ON ESPN
Stadio Bentegodi

For the second time in three years Roma go into the last day needing a win and an Inter slip-up to lift the Scudetto.

That's not the only eerie similarity between the present day and the 2007/08 season.

Once again Inter have thrown away a seemingly unassailable advantage, once again both title contenders end the campaign with away fixtures against unfancied outfits.

This time Roma travel to Chievo while Inter visit Siena. In 2008 Roma famously topped Serie A for an hour on the final day, as they led Catania and the Nerazzurri toiled in the rain in Parma, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic stepped off the Tardini bench and broke Giallorossi hearts.

Defender Juan recognises the similarities but is convinced his side will prevail against the odds this time round.

“We will go through the same emotions as two years ago, but the end result will be different,” said the Brazilian. “The Scudetto doesn't just depend on us, but I am confident that everything will go the right way. We want to play until the last second.”

One clear difference between 2008 and now is that Catania and Parma had something to play for, Siena and Chievo do not. Even so Roma's is the tougher task.
Siena are relegated, Chievo are mid-table, and with a formidable record against the big boys to maintain. Only last weekend the Flying Donkeys proved they won't be lying down for anyone when they pushed Inter to the edge at San Siro, fighting back from 4-1 down to finish 4-3.

Few would begrudge Roma a Scudetto triumph given the extraordinary circumstances of their campaign, their underdog status, their attractive brand of football, their unquenchable spirit, and their very likeable Coach Claudio Ranieri.
Nonetheless the odds are stacked against them. How they must rue their collapse against Sampdoria three weeks ago. That 2-1 defeat took it out of their hands. Now all they can do is win and hope.

Chievo's Davide Mandelli, Santiago Morero, Giampiero Pinzi and Yonese Hanine are injured, as is Roma's Alexander Doni, whilst John Arne Riise is suspended.

Keep an eye on: Francesco Totti (Roma) - Having been vilified for volleying Mario Balotelli in the Coppa Italia final and redeemed himself with a dramatic late double against Cagliari that kept Roma's title hopes alive, its been quite a week for Er Pupone. It would mean so much to the fans and the man himself if it were Totti that scored the goal that won Roma the Scudetto-he'll give absolutely everything he has.

Last five in Serie A: Chievo (L W W L L) Roma (W W L W W)

Last season: 0-1

Chievo (probable): Sorrentino; Sardo, Frey, Scardina, Mantovani, Jokic; Luciano, Rigoni, Marcolini; Pellissier, Abbruscato

Roma (probable): Julio Sergio; Motta, Burdisso, Juan, Cassetti; Pizarro, De Rossi, Perrotta; Menez; Totti, Vucinic
Serie A Week 38 - 16/5/10 (14.00 UK)
Parma - Livorno
Stadio Tardini

There will be many farewells at the Tardini, as Livorno salute Serie A and Francesco Guidolin probably leaves Parma.

Both sides were promoted last summer, but have had very different journeys since. The Ducali secured their safety several weeks ago and celebrated with a surprise 3-2 victory away to Juventus on Sunday. Despite these impressive results, Coach Guidolin wants guarantees on the club’s ambition for next season and has hinted at a possible return to Udinese.

“I am a little disappointed,” confessed President Tommaso Ghirardi. “We had a long-term plan that frankly I thought we’d continue. Up until a few weeks ago I thought there were no problems, but evidently there must be. We didn’t intend to change, but our Coach has received some proposals and is evaluating them.”

Someone who will be at Parma next term is Cristiano Lucarelli, who spent the current campaign on loan at his beloved hometown club. He won’t be able to play in this game after picking up an injury, but will sit in the stands. Younger brother Alessandro, who now plays for Parma, is bound to be on the pitch against the Amaranto, while Stefano Morrone and Luca Pavarini are also ex-Livorno men.

Livorno’s treatment room is packed with Leonardo Miglionico, Nelson Rivas, Francesco Tavano, Dario Knezevic and Nico Pulzetti. Also doubtful are Antonio Filippini, Andrea Esposito, Pablo Diniz and Mirko Pieri, so Tomas Danilevicius and Claudio Bellucci could lead the line.

Parma are without Damiano Zenoni and Massimo Paci, but welcome back Blerim Dzemaili and Luis Jimenez from suspension. The team did well enough in their absence, stunning Juventus in Turin for the first time since 1999. Now they aim to end the season on another high in front of their home fans. It remains to be seen which of the strikers Guidolin will pick from the selection of Jonathan Biabiany, Hernan Crespo, Davide Lanzafame and Valeri Bojinov. He could even experiment with a 4-4-1-1 system.

The last edition of this fixture was a 0-0 draw last season in Serie B, but in 2007-08 fans saw a thrilling 3-2 Parma victory.

Keep an eye on: Jonathan Biabiany (Parma) – The fastest striker in Serie A scored a well-taken goal against Juventus last week and hopes to have a field day with Livorno’s leaky defence. Biabiany has already netted six in his debut top flight season and could prove a valuable investment in his co-ownership deal with Inter.

Last five in Serie A: Parma (W L L L W) Livorno (L L W L L)

Parma (probable): Mirante; Dellafiore, A Lucarelli, Zaccardo, Antonelli; Valiani, Dzemaili, Morrone, Galloppa; Jimenez; Biabiany

Livorno (probable): De Lucia; Bernardini, Perticone, Galante; Raimondi, Moro, Mozart, Prutsch, Vitale; Bellucci, Danilevicius
Serie A Week 38 - 16/5/10 (14.00 UK)
Sampdoria - Napoli
GOALS WILL BE SHOWN DURING SIENA-INTER ON ESPN
Stadio Ferraris

Sampdoria can make sure of fourth place and Champions League qualification with a win at home to Napoli on Sunday.

The Blucerchiati set out this season with the aim of finishing 10th, but they have exceeded expectations under Gigi Del Neri.

Samp have lost just once in over two months and are unbeaten in seven games ahead of Napoli’s visit to Liguria.

Del Neri has turned Marassi into a fortress, so much so that Samp last suffered defeat at home in Serie A on January 18, 2009.

Credit for that should also go to his predecessor, Napoli boss Walter Mazzarri who has worked similar wonders at the San Paolo this season.

Del Neri will be treating this weekend’s match as perhaps the biggest job interview of his life, as he is now in pole position to replace Alberto Zaccheroni at Juventus.

Beppe Marotta is also expected to move to Turin and become Juventus’ new general manager, so this weekend could be the end of an era at Samp.

Napoli’s interest in Sampdoria’s topscorer Giampaolo Pazzini also adds some spice to the encounter.

The Partenopei have been excellent since Mazzarri replaced Roberto Donadoni but if there is one criticism to make, it’s simply that they haven’t scored enough goals.

Napoli’s away record this season spells six wins, six draws and six defeats, but it’s been average rather than hellish as 666 suggests.

Come what may on Sunday, Napoli will finish sixth, their best placing for 16 years.

Keep an eye on: Fabio Quagliarella (Napoli) – Fresh from his inclusion in Marcello Lippi’s preliminary 30-man World Cup squad, Quagliarella will be trying to make the final cut by scoring against the team with whom he made his name.

Last five in Serie A: Sampdoria (W W W W D) Napoli (L W D W W)

Last season: 2-2

Sampdoria (probable): Storari; Zauri, Gastaldello, Lucchini, Ziegler; Semioli, Palombo, Poli, Guberti; Pazzini, Cassano

Napoli (probable): De Sanctis; Grava, Cannavaro, Aronica; Maggio, Cigarini, Pazienza, Dossena; Quagliarella, Hamsik; Denis
Serie A Week 38 - 16/5/10 (14.00 UK)
Siena - Inter
LIVE ON ESPN
Stadio Franchi

Ninety minutes and an already relegated Siena side stand between Inter and their 5th successive title.

After seven seasons, Siena are preparing to play their last game in the Italian top flight.

There has been plenty of controversy surrounding this tie, but Siena President Massimo Mezzaroma has been quick to quash suggestions they will allow the Nerazzurri to take the title with ease.

“We are leaving Serie A with the whole world watching our final game - we want to look good and will be no pushover,” he said.

Despite these statements of intent, the Bianconeri have faced the weeks training with a very relaxed attitude - two friendly games, one against their sponsor's team, which ended 19-0.

This gave the strikers a chance to enjoy themselves and the defenders a chance to rest.

Alberto Malesani will have an almost complete squad to rely one.

There may be only a few changes from the side that almost snatched a win in Florence last weekend.

Currently, defender Marco Malago is favoured over Claudio Terzi. Simone Vergassola and Albin Ekdal should act again as holding midfielders, and Mate Jajalo should get to start in the three man line that will support lone centre forward Emanuele Calaio'.

Jose Mourinho also has an almost full squad available as he prepares for the final two games that could make this Inter's most successful season. Only Davide Santon and Ramiro Cordoba have trained alone this week, with only the latter hoping to recover in time for Madrid.

Two big names that have rejoined the group this week are Lucio and Wesley Sneijder, though it is unlikely the Special One will risk playing them from the start. Marco Materazzi should start alongside Walter Samuel at the back, and Dejan Stankovic has the best chances of replacing the Dutchman, and starting behind Diego Milito.

The Robur are adamant they will go out and challenge Inter - although history in these sorts of ties, and of course the Nerazzurri's sheer class suggest this game has only one way to go: the Serie A leaders will dominate the relegated side and win the closest title race in years.

Keep an eye on: Mario Balotelli (Inter) - This boy has had a rollercoaster season! Only the last month has been packed with more drama than most players see in a lifetime. After the Barcelona game his Inter days seemed to be all but over - all it took was for an attack from a bigger Inter enemy like Francesco Totti for him to regain the status of golden boy. Suffering that kick from Totti in the Coppa Italia Final was just the ticket to get back on terms with the Nerazzurri faithful, and now the young Italian can hope for a call up to the Champions League Final squad - this is his chance to convince Mourinho he is worthy.

Last five in Serie A: Siena (W D L L D) Inter (D W W W W)

Last season: 1-2

Siena (probable): Curci; Rosi, Cribari, Malago, Del Grosso; Vergassola, Ekdal, Jajalo; Ghezzal, Maccarone, Calaio

Inter (probable): Julio Cesar; Maicon, Materazzi, Samuel, Zanetti; Cambiasso, Motta; Eto'o, Stankovic, Balotelli; Milito
