SATURDAY

Birmingham v West Brom

Birmingham v West Brom (1245 GMT)

It will be interesting to see what state Birmingham's players are in after beating Arsenal to win the Carling Cup final at Wembley on Sunday. It was a fantastic result for them, and a real triumph for teamwork and never believing you are beaten. That is something you cannot buy - you have to foster and develop it.

You have to wonder if this game might be a case of after the Lord Mayor's Show for the Blues but if you look at the table, you can see that they have to get themselves motivated because they are in desperate need of the three points.

They are one win away from going to Wembley again, in a potential FA Cup semi-final, but they have to be careful that they don't lose sight of what is happening in the league. I'm sure their manager Alex McLeish and some of the strong characters in their squad will make sure of that.

But it will not be easy for them against West Brom. The ball is running for the Baggies a bit at the moment - Carlos Vela looks like scoring for them every time he touches it - and they pinched a point at Stoke on Monday.

They could even have won that game in the end but, the more time they spend under Roy Hodgson, the more difficult they become to beat. Hodgson needs to start turning draws into wins at some stage but he will be of the opinion that they are unbeaten with him in charge and that is a good basis to start from. I can see them getting another point here.

Prediction: 1-1

Match preview

Arsenal v Sunderland

Arsenal v Sunderland

Arsenal's problem is that they will have one eye on the second leg of their Champions League tie with Barcelona next week. We already know Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott are injured for that match, and I cannot see Gunners boss Arsene Wenger playing Cesc Fabregas against Sunderland because he cannot possibly afford to risk being without him on Tuesday.

But Arsenal still have lots of quality elsewhere in their squad and I think they will have too much about them for the Black Cats.

Apart from an early Kieran Richardson chance, which he missed, they created very little at Goodison Park last Saturday and Everton won at a canter. Sunderland have now lost four games in a row and I think that awful run will continue at the Emirates.

Prediction: 2-0

Match preview

Bolton v Aston Villa

Bolton v Aston Villa

It was strange to see Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier tossing his hopes of FA Cup progression away with his team selection in their fifth-round defeat by Manchester City on Wednesday night. I could not understand it, because they are not in any real danger in the league. It was squad rotation gone mad.

Even with Villa's best players back, though, you still have to fancy Bolton at home. They have lost only one of their last seven games and their loan striker Daniel Sturridge cannot stop scoring goals. Wanderers boss Owen Coyle has obviously found a way that works of accommodating him, Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander.

There has been a lot of talk this week about Sturridge's future. He is a Premier League player but I am not sure he is a top-four player. If I were him and the opportunity arose to play for a team that had a good chance of finishing in the top 10 then I would take it, because I think his chances at Chelsea remain limited, even if Didier Drogba were to leave in the summer.

Prediction: 2-0

Match preview

Fulham v Blackburn

Fulham v Blackburn

Blackburn were brilliant for about half-an-hour of the first half against Villa last week but they just couldn't sustain it. They made so many defensive errors in the second half it was frightening and Villa didn't have to play particularly well to beat them comfortably, which is worrying from a Rovers point of view.

Fulham, on the other hand, got a very good point at Manchester City on Sunday and looked solid. Their boss Mark Hughes has got through his own iffy spell and, although there is not much distance between them and the relegation zone, you just know they will be absolutely fine.

Prediction: 2-0

Match preview

Newcastle v Everton

Newcastle v Everton

Nothing has changed with Everton in the last few months in that they are a decent side right up until they reach the opposing penalty area. It has been a strange season for them and you cannot help thinking what their manager David Moyes makes about the general situation at the club, and the lack of money he has had to spend to try to rectify their problems.

I know they were without injured pair Marouane Fellaini and Tim Cahill when they crashed out of the FA Cup on Tuesday but I still expected them to beat Reading at home, especially after they had knocked out the holders Chelsea on penalties to get there and easily despatched Sunderland in the meantime.

You just cannot be sure what you are going to get from Everton, while Newcastle are far more consistent. The Magpies keep picking up points and have lost only once in the league this year. I cannot see Everton getting anything at St James' Park.

Prediction: 2-1

Match preview

West Ham v Stoke

West Ham v Stoke

West Ham have suddenly started finding goals from everywhere and were very impressive in their win over Liverpool on Sunday. Scott Parker ran the show in that game, and he has been Mr West Ham all season.

Thomas Hitzlsperger is a decent player and is now fit to play alongside Parker in midfield, then up front they have the likes of Demba Ba and Frederic Piquionne. Both of them look full of goals and full of running at the moment.

Stoke are no pushovers but, on the road, they are beatable and I am going to go for a narrow Hammers victory.

Prediction: 2-1

Match preview

Man City v Wigan

Man City v Wigan (1730 GMT)

You have to fancy City because a) they are at home and b) they are up against a Wigan side which looks pretty vulnerable to me.

I think we saw a good example against Manchester United on Saturday of what the Latics are like - basically they need to score the first goal or they are in trouble. Wigan had loads of chances and Edwin van der Sar kept United in the game for a while but, when Roberto Martinez's side fell behind, they were then cut open far too easily.

Manchester City are definitely not going to win the league now so the pressure is off them in that respect.

They just need to keep bashing away to make sure they pick up enough points to finish in the top four, especially with Chelsea looking like they might be going on a run.

Prediction: 3-0

Match preview

SUNDAY

Liverpool v Man Utd

Liverpool v Man Utd (1330 GMT)

You can normally count on Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson to get his team selection right for the big games but he has a problem in that he will be without the suspended Nemanja Vidic at the back on Sunday.

That is why this might be a good time for Liverpool to unleash their £35m striker Andy Carroll for the first time. If he is injury-free, why not? Carroll is not definitely match-fit but he is only going to get that by playing.

I am going to go for a draw which won't be much good to United if Arsenal win on Saturday. You looked at this run of games that United are on beforehand and thought it might prove tricky. So it would not be a surprise if, having seen them lose to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, they drop a couple of points at Anfield too.

One way or another, though, this one will be lively. Lunchtime games, whether they are on Saturday or Sunday, do not usually crackle with atmosphere, but I think this one will.

There is so much riding on it: Carroll's possible Reds debut, Wayne Rooney going back to Merseyside and Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish up against Ferguson again. There is unfinished business from their FA Cup tie in January, and plenty from before that as well.

Prediction: 1-1

Match preview

Wolves v Tottenham

Wolves v Tottenham (1600 GMT)

Remembering the late Dean Richards, who played for both clubs, will be high on the agenda, as it should be. It is terribly sad for someone to lose their life at the age of 36.

It might affect the mood of the game too but I would still go for Wolves here - I saw them against West Brom a couple of weeks ago and was very impressed. They drew but I thought they were the better team and should have won.

They played very well against Blackpool last weekend too and, even if Blackpool had not had a man sent off, it wouldn't have made any difference, because they would still have beaten them.

Tottenham play AC Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday and I think their minds will be on that game.

I've got a feeling Spurs might be the odd ones out in the battle between them, City and Chelsea for a top-four place this season. One of Tottenham's problems is that I think they will still be in the Champions League after Wednesday night and will have to keep one eye on that.

The difference between them and the other sides in the top five is that the others are capable of playing badly and still getting something on a more regular basis than Harry Redknapp's team can, at the moment anyway. If the season were going to finish in the next couple of weeks, then it would be them who I would say would miss out.

Prediction: 2-1

Match preview

MONDAY

Blackpool v Chelsea

Blackpool v Chelsea (2000 GMT)

Blackpool are still without midfielder Charlie Adam, who remains suspended, and in his absence against Wolves last week we saw how important Adam is to the Seasiders. He is instrumental to the way they play and they just do not have the depth in his squad to change things around when he is not there. Their main striker, DJ Campbell, is also serving a ban, which is another blow.

Even if Blackpool beat you, you still get lots of chances against them, that's the way they are. So I'd have to go for Chelsea, who seem to be doing better in a 4-4-2 formation and will have a bit of confidence back after beating Manchester United, to pick up another three points here.
